Virtual Reality can be the future of Work from Home setup

People who are comfortable working from home, those who have found a good balance between their life and work, will not back down now. They have tasted what it's like working from home, all the while successfully managing their personal life. This is pushing companies to adapt to the changing landscape.

Today, we are using the necessary communication tools to get our work done. We interact through video calls, email more, chat more, and call more. But all these activities are happening in 2D. Despite staying in constant touch, it gives the impression of colleagues working from somewhere afar. This gap is the reason some companies have taken steps to completely scrap the work-from-home policy after the pandemic. They want to bring back that sense of community and increased collaboration in the office.

So, a dichotomy exists between companies that want to pull employees to the office and employees who want to stay back at their home. The argument is, 'If I am working productively and giving my all even from home, why shouldn't I be allowed to work from home?' The point is valid, but not from the perspective of some companies.

And I think this tension has one solution - Virtual Reality.

Today, companies are building excellent VR equipment that is likely to improve and develop in the days to come.

For example, Facebook's VR headsets can make you feel that you are standing together with other people in the same room, working on the same stuff. The caricatures in Facebook's environment may become more real and indistinguishable with each passing time. I am saying this because, with the boost in GenAI, technology will improve further. It will help build better and more robust VR technologies, also pulling down the cost of implementation.

In fact, if someone decides today, it is possible to implement VR headsets in a company setting to increase the sense of collaboration. But, there are some limits that still need to be overcome. One big reason is that having that headset on your eyes all day is not feasible for most; it may strain the eyes. However, it is up for testing and our adaptability. Today, most complain of eye strain and poor health due to working all day on computers and phones. Still, things are moving forward. We are working hours on computers. In the same way, we may see ourselves wearing VR headsets all day long while working for companies.
